Shake Shack x Refoundry: Built to Last

This Old Shack. The Flatbush Shack team hooked up St. Hope students with burgers as they toured the Shack's charity partner, Refoundry. In their Brooklyn Navy Yard woodshop, Refoundry trains formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into one-of-a-kind home furnishings.

Refoundry's model is designed around creative activities that build skills, self-worth and community. Each piece produced is crafted by hand from reclaimed material and values the maker’s experience.

The Flatbush Shack donates 5% of sales from the Brooklyn Pie Oh My frozen custard concrete to Refoundry and partners with the organization on local events.

After students finished their burgers, they picked up paintbrushes. Refoundry invites people from all over the world to participate in a co-creative public art project called Hand-In-Hand. Participants' hands are painted and imprinted on reclaimed pieces of pine as lasting symbols of the strength and versatility of the human hand. The project, in part based on the fingerprinting of an arrested person's hand, affirms the creativity, value and individuality of all citizens.
